Inauguration of Zephyr 09 and the launch of the Blog

The first National Level P. G. Management Fest of Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college, "Zephyr–09" was inaugurated on 2nd April 2009 at 9.30 am in the College Auditorium. Mr John D’Silva Chief Promoter and First Managing Director of Abhyudaya Co-operative Bank Ltd was the Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, Director Fr Muller Charitable Institutions, Mangalore presided over the function. Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director of St Joseph Engineering College and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, St Joseph Engineering College were the guests of honours.Chief Guest Mr John D’silva in his inaugural message spoke on the role of MBA students in the society, encouraged them to be role models and cast votes and to bring justice to the world in the democratic country.
Rev. Fr Patrick Rodrigues, President inaugurated the department blog http://sjecmba.blogspot.com which provides information of the events of the department. In his presidential remarks he motivated the MBA students to the innovation and venture out as entrepreneurs.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis wished all the participants their best for the events of Zephyr–09.The student co-ordinator Mr Adolf D’Souza proposed the vote of thanks. Ms Smitha Jesudasan, Faculty Coordinator of Zephyr 09 and Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Asst Director were also present on the dais.

Zephyr 09 is a National Level P G Management Fest organised by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College.

First Sessional Exams

The students of MBA, 2nd and 4th semester have the First Sessional Exam from 21st to 25th March, 2009.

College Day 09 at SJEC

The college day of St Joseph Engineering College, was held on 19^th March, 2009 at the open air theatre of the campus. Mr Robinson D'Souza, Former Principal Secretary, Karnataka Legislature, was the chief guest of the program. Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop of Mangalore, presided over the function. Fr Valerian D’Souza, director of the college, welcomed the gathering and Dr Joseph Gonsalves, principal of the college, unveiled the annual report. Prof. Eric Patrao, dean planning and development and the convener of the college day, proposed vote of thanks. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, assistant director, and Prof. A Jayakara Hegde, dean academic were also present. The formal program was compeered by Ms Smita Jesudasan and Mr Suraj F Noronha.

The students performed cultural program including filmy dance, singing, and skits which entertained the audience. The students of Second year MBA lead by Mr Tippeswamy M Sheelam performed a skit with a message of patriotism.

RTI Act is a powerful tool in the hands of Citizens: Mr Robinson D’Souza

As part of the SJEC MBA Special Lecture Series a special lecture on ‘Right to Information Act’ was organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangalore on 18th March 2009.


Mr Robinson D’Souza, Former Principal Secretary, Karnataka Legislature, Government of Karnataka delivered the lecture. He spoke about the purpose, scope, facilities and provisions of the act. He cited many examples from the past and present relating to obtaining the information from public authorities. He emphasized that right to information is a powerful tool in the hands of citizens to reduce corruption. It is an act drafted by the common people for the benefit of the common people.


Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean-MBA welcomed the gathering and Mr Suraj Francis Noronha, Faculty Incharge for Special Lecture Series proposed the vote of thanks. The Director Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Assistant Director Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Principal Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Dean Academics Prof. A. J Hegde, Dr Vincent Crasta - HOD Dept of Physics, Mr Godfrey Pinto – Personnel Manager and faculty members of MBA and other departments were present for the Lecture.

Special lecture on 'US Recession and Its Impact on Indian Economy'

Prof B V Raghunandan, SVS College, delivered a special lecture on 'US Recession and Its Impact on Indian Economy' as part of the 'SJEC-MBA Special Lecture Series', conducted by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, on 5th March, 2009.

Prof Raghunandan identified reducing sales and profits, increasing unemployment, hesitation of new investment, reducing government revenue, and gold replacing dollar as reserve currency, as the main causes of recession.

He added that excessive use of credit derivatives like collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), and credit default swaps (CDSs) by US banks contributed to that country's financial crisis.

Prof Raghunandan stated that the current recession has not affected Indian businesses much except for some of the export-oriented units. He urged the management students to become entrepreneurs and develop socially-relevant business as recruitment by companies has declined.

The professor termed the current recession as being beneficial to India as it will stop the mad spree of westernization, recognize the bigger role of government, and question the utility of derivatives.

Inauguration of SJEC-MBA Special Lecture Series

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangalore inaugurated “SJEC-MBA Special Lecture Series” on Friday 10th October, 2008 at 3:15 pm. Dr M. S. Moodithaya, Director, Justice K. S. Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte inaugurated the program and gave a lecture on ‘Corporate Philanthropy’. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean MBA welcomed the guests. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal SJEC was the guest of honour. Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director SJEC gave the presidential address. Prof. A J Hegde, Dean Academics was also present.

Dr M. S. Moodithaya in his Lecture spoke on how Indian economy has grown over the last 20 years. He differentiated between charity and philanthropy and stressed that corporate India should mix business with philanthropy. Companies therefore must create wealth and then give it back to the society.
The Department of Business Administration, St Josephs Engineering College, strives to endow the students with knowledge of the contemporary topics and awareness of the trends in the economy, market, industry and practices of the corporate world. The department has constituted a series of guest lectures by renowned speakers from both the corporate and academic world to realize this endeavour. This facilitates the students to gain from their expertise, knowledge and experiences. The aim is to go beyond the academic curriculum and instill in the students the conceptual knowledge, corporate know-how and entrepreneurial attitude.
