Colloquy – 12, A Symposium on Consumer Rights at St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore
Urging the present youth to fight for their rights as consumers was the main thrust of the keynote address given by MR.M.J. Salian, President, DK District Federation of Consumer Organisations and Consumer Information Centre, Mangalore on the inaugural occasion of “Colloquy – 12”, the one day  symposium on Consumer Rights organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore. Mr.M.J.Salian also enlightened the MBA and M Com students on the rights of consumers and outlined the historical background of the development of Consumer movement and Consumer Protection Act in India. The Redressal system accessible to the lay person to fight for his rights and the credible work undertaken by the DK District Federation of Consumer organizations and Consumer Information Centre to serve the society was also highlighted by him. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, welcomed the gathering.  The Principal, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, deliberated on the awareness of the rights of the consumers. Ms. Babitha Rohit, Organizing Secretary, Colloquy – 12 proposed the vote of thanks.










Mr. Addoor Krishna Rao. Faculty, Staff Training College, Corporation Bank and Convener, Consumer Forum, Mangalore touched upon Consumer Activism. He related his experiences of fighting for the cause of the consumers for the past 25 years. Giving live consumer cases, he advised the youth to use social networking sites like Face book and Twitter to generate campaign for consumer rights.



Mr. Edwin D’Mello, Senior Vice President and Chairman – Enforcement, DK District Federation of Consumer Organisations and Consumer Information Centre, Mangalore, the Chief Guest for the valedictory function of Colloquy – 12 stated his personal experiences in the struggle for advocacy of consumers’ rights. He cited the cases of MESCOM and Passport Office. He hoped that the students would be inspired by the symposium to take up the issue of consumer rights. Dr Anjali Ganesh, Professor, Department Business Administration welcomed the gathering. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, presided over the function and Ms. Shakila B. Asst Professor, Department of Business Administration proposed the vote of thanks.

Successful Completion of Rendition 12, A National Level Paper Presentation Contest and Productive Dialogue on 27 September, 2012


Mangalore, September 27: Rendition 12, A National Level Paper Presentation Contest and Productive Dialogue was organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College on 27 September, 2012 on the theme ‘Innovation’. The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest - Mr J.R. Lobo, Honorary Chairman, Administrative Committee of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama; the President - Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director; the Guests of Honour - Rev. Fr Rohit D’Costa, Assistant Director, Rev. Fr Ajith Menezes, Assistant Director, Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice- Principal; Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, Ms Smita Jesduasan, Rendition 12 Faculty Co-ordinator,  Ms Jennifer Saldanha and Ms Julia Alvares the student co-ordinators at 9.30 am in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC.







Ms Smita Jesduasan, Renditon 12 Faculty Co-ordinator welcomed the august gathering. Mr J R Lobo, Honorary Chairman, Administrative Committee of Pilikula Nisarga Dhama, in his Inaugural Address remarked on the need of innovation in the present era for the growth of the society and nation. He urged the M.B.A and the M.Com students to strive for new ideas and have a lot of them to surge forward and achieve the pinnacle of success. Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address cited that the innovations should be new and not imitated. He commented that innovations have been the crux of the development of the Western world and needed to be emphasized in India too. Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice – Principal, SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address stressed that innovation in the younger generation should blossom in the age of competitiveness and dynamism. Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director, SJEC in his Presidential Address, mentioned that the programme would foster learning and knowledge to achieve innovation. He added that the students should ooze confidence, collaborate, involve and share in the process of innovation. Ms Jennifer Saldanha, Student Co-ordinator, Rendition 12 proposed the vote of thanks for the Inaugural Function. Ms Lasya N Murthy, student III Semester MBA was the M.C. for the Inaugural Function.

























There were 45 paper presentations from the M.Com and M.B.A. students of colleges from Mangalore, Udupi, Puttur, Ujjre, Moodabidri, Bangalore, Mysore and Davangere in the specialization areas of Finance, Marketing and Human Resource. Around 25 students participated in the productive dialogue, the first in Mangalore city and deliberated on ‘Innovation is the creation of the new or the rearranging of the old to make a new thing’.

The programme came to an end with the Valedictory Function. Dr Sr Celine Vas, Principal, St Raymonds College was the Chief Guest for the Valedictory Session at 3.30 pm in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block, SJEC. She cited the examples of small town people who achieved innovations in a small way and made the place a better place for the people of their cities to dwell in. She congratulated the team of MBA for hosting the programme on innovation. Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, in his Guest of Honour Address motivated the students to grasp opportunities to develop their public speaking skills and to be eloquent speakers. He illustrated that the youth should voice their opinions and be proactive. Dr Rio D’Souza, Vice Principal, SJEC in his presidential remarks addressed the students on the fear of the unknown which prevents them to innovate in their personal lives. Ms Smita Jesudasan, Rendition 12 Faculty Co-ordinator proposed the vote of thanks. Mr Kevin Pinto, student III Semester MBA was the MC for the Valedictory Function.

Colloquy - 12: A Symposium on Consumer Rights on 28 September 2012


Modern business is an integral part of current day society and has embarked the consumer world into an entirely new dimension. As consumers it is of utmost importance to be conscious of our rights and make full use of them as well as to be protected from unscrupulous trade practices. This one day symposium will enrich the aspiring intellectual minds of the MBA and M.Com students on the ramifications of exercising consumer rights. It brings together consumer right activists to review best practices, examine critical issues and discuss how consumers can be protected from exploitation and infringement of rights.

Rendition is the interpretation of the concept to understand, clarify and review the principal points and express the conclusions. Rendition assumes supremacy in the present times wherein management students have to learn to identify, focus and realise their true potential to achieve a competitive advantage.

Genesis, a Forum of MBA Students, St Joseph Engineering College presents an opportunity for the MBA and M.Com students to capitalise upon by organising Rendition 12, a National Level Paper Presentation Contest and a Productive Dialogue on 27th September, 2012. It is the endeavour to foster knowledge consciousness, congruence with ones values and ethics, commitment to share, collaborate to explore ideas and active engagement to advocate change and innovation.

Call for Papers
The theme ‘Innovation’ is chosen for the Paper Presentation to invoke creative thinking.  Rendition is designed to encourage paper submissions from interested MBA and M.Com students that take unique perspectives on the critical issues related to the finance, marketing and human resource management.

Guidelines for the Paper Presentation Contest
  1. The competition is open to all Management and Commerce students from all recognised institutes and universities in India.
  2. Any number of entries can be submitted from a single management institute in different specialization areas.
  3. Co- authored papers will not be accepted.
  4. There is an entry fee of Rs 150/- per person for the paper presentation.
  5. Plagiarism should be avoided.
  6. E-mail the soft copy of the full paper to rendition.paperpresentation@gmail.com by 12th September, 2012.
  7. After preliminary screening, the selected paper presenters will be notified personally through e-mail by 15th September, 2012.
  8. The final presentation will be held on 27th September, 2012 at St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore.
  9. The time allotted for the presentation will be 10 + 5 minutes.
  10. The final presentation should be made in Microsoft Power Point 2007 only.
  11. The decision of the organizers of the contest and the panel of judges will be final and binding on all participants.

Format for Full Paper
  • Typing: 1.5 line spacing on A4 sized paper.
  • Font: Times New Roman, Size 12.
  • Margins: 1.5” (left) and 1” (right).
  • Aligned and Justified
  • Limit: 10 to 12 pages (Including Bibliography)
  • The full paper should include –
ü  First page should furnish title of the paper, area of specialisation, authors’ name, name of the institute, email id and phone numbers of the author.
ü  Abstract should not exceed 350 words.
ü  Bibliography as per APA style.

Invite for Productive Dialogue
The colleges are invited to send a team of three delegates (other than the paper presenters) to participate in the Productive Dialogue which will be held during Rendition-12. Productive dialogue is an in-depth, interactive conversation between students oriented towards identification of key challenges and solutions that can be instrumental to enhance their quality of growth and leadership. The topic of the productive dialogue will be announced on 27th September, 2012 during Rendition 12.

Registration Fee
A registration fee of Rs. 150/- per person must be paid for the participation in the paper presentation and the productive dialogue.

Prizes to be Won
First Prize of Rs. 1,500/- to be awarded in each area of specialisation of Paper Presentation and the Productive Dialogue.

Important Dates
Last Date for online submission of full paper: 12th September, 2012.

Inaugural Function of the National Conference "Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence"


Dr Stephen D’Silva, “ 7 – Point Programme” at the Inaugural of National Conference on ‘Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence’, St Joseph Engineering College.

The National Conference on ‘Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence’ organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 22 March, 2012 at 10.00 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC.


Dr Stephen D’ Silva, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in his Key note address asserted the ‘7 – point programme’ comprising Values, Learning, Conviction and Passion, Change, Humility, Team Work and Optimism to be inculcated in individuals to achieve excellence in life. He cited the examples of Tata Group, Mr Jamnalal Bajaj, Mr Phil Knight, Mr Jeff Bessos, Premier Autonomibles, Arthrur Anderson in linkage with the 7-point programme. He testified that the MBA graduates learn 10% from academics, 15% from social and professional networks and 75% from the schools of hard knock. He posed a query to the students to decide on the category of people they belong to – those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened. His concluding remarks were “As you step into the fun filled exciting world, do not forget your parents and teachers as they have created this finished product.”

Mr Albert D’ Souza, Chairman, Printania Offset Pvt. Ltd. & Chairman, St. John's College of Engineering & Technology, Mumbai in his Chief Guest Address stated that organizations should focus on quality service and excellence through a continuous monitoring of the gap between the customers’ expectations and service delivered. He narrated the success stories of Marico Industries, Model Co-operative Bank, Mumbai and Printania Offset Pvt. Ltd. to illustrate his view point.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the conference a success and hoped that the delegates would have a fruitful deliberation at the two day conference.

Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address quoted, ‘Chances create fate, Choices create plan and destiny’. He commented that the organizations of today should make good choices rather than a chance to be successful.

Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director - SJEC in his Presidential Remarks reinforced the theme of the national conference  by stating that the organizations should endeavour to be unique in delivery of services to the customers with a smile rather than a mechanistic procedure.
