Inaugural Function of the National Conference "Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence"

The National Conference on ‘Achieving Distinctive Competence through Service and Excellence’ organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 22 March, 2012 at 10.00 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC.

Dr Stephen D’ Silva, Director, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in his Key note address asserted the ‘7 – point programme’ comprising Values, Learning, Conviction and Passion, Change, Humility, Team Work and Optimism to be inculcated in individuals to achieve excellence in life. He cited the examples of Tata Group, Mr Jamnalal Bajaj, Mr Phil Knight, Mr Jeff Bessos, Premier Autonomibles, Arthrur Anderson in linkage with the 7-point programme. He testified that the MBA graduates learn 10% from academics, 15% from social and professional networks and 75% from the schools of hard knock. He posed a query to the students to decide on the category of people they belong to – those who make things happen, those who watch things happen and those who wonder what happened. His concluding remarks were “As you step into the fun filled exciting world, do not forget your parents and teachers as they have created this finished product.”

Mr Albert D’ Souza, Chairman, Printania Offset Pvt. Ltd. & Chairman, St. John's College of Engineering & Technology, Mumbai in his Chief Guest Address stated that organizations should focus on quality service and excellence through a continuous monitoring of the gap between the customers’ expectations and service delivered. He narrated the success stories of Marico Industries, Model Co-operative Bank, Mumbai and Printania Offset Pvt. Ltd. to illustrate his view point.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the conference a success and hoped that the delegates would have a fruitful deliberation at the two day conference.

Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director – SJEC in his Guest of Honour Address quoted, ‘Chances create fate, Choices create plan and destiny’. He commented that the organizations of today should make good choices rather than a chance to be successful.

Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director - SJEC in his Presidential Remarks reinforced the theme of the national conference  by stating that the organizations should endeavour to be unique in delivery of services to the customers with a smile rather than a mechanistic procedure.

The Inaugural of First year MBA classes

The Inaugural of First year MBA classes for the academic year 2011-12 was on 3rd October, 2011 at 10am at the Mechanical Conference Hall. The chief guest was Mr. Joseph Stephen Pinto, Senior Manager, Head of Anti money Laundering Compliance, HSBC, Middle East. He mentioned in his speech that the students must grab all the opportunities and work on building a good reputation for themselves. Guests of Honour Rev. Fr.Henry Mascarenhas & Rev Fr Valerain D’Souza wished the students all the best. President of the function Dr. Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal motivated the young students to put in their best from the day one.

Dr. Rio D’Souza, Dean Academics & MCA welcomed the gathering. Prof. Eric Patrao, Dean Planning & development, Dr. Prakash Pinto Dean MBA, Dr. Pinto Pius HOD-E & E, Dr. Thirumaleshwar Bhat, HOD- ME were present on the dias. Dr. Anjali Ganesh proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was attended by HOD's & faculty of other departments, Faculty of MBA & MCA, First Year Students of MBA and MCA & MTech. Colloquy-11 A symposium on wealth Management

Colloquy-11, A symposium on Wealth Management was organised by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College on 30th September,2011 at the Conference Hall.

The chief guest was the Inaugural function was Dr T. Mallikarjunappa, Professor, Department of Business Administration, Mangalore University. As a key note speaker, he addressed that India has huge pool of human resources who are technically qualified and is a centre of attraction. He referred population as wealth. and insisted on producing goods which are countable to increase the GDP of nation, this will help in growth of the nation. He made a distinction between wealth and profit maximisation and added on saying creation of wealth is superior to profit. Wealth management cannot be looked in a narrow sense and if you earned enough wealth after cutting on breakfast, lunch and dinner, you have not created wealth but destroyed your health. So, we should look at wealth in a broader sense.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal, SJEC was the Guest of Honour for the inaugural delivered his address by saying that wealth management is not easy and understanding this requires supreme knowledge and it was a priviledge to have Dr T. Mallikarjunappa to give us the inputs.

As a token of respect and gratitude, the Director of SJEC handed over the memento to our Chief Guest. Rev. Fr Valerian D’souza, the Director of SJEC was present for the inaugural. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean of Business Administration welcomed the gathering and the vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Babitha Rohit, Organising Secretary, Colloquy-11.

The first session on the topic “Stock Market Investments and Wealth Management” was conducted by Mr. Norbert Shenoy, MD of Arunaanjali Securities, Mangalore. He made a mention that “Market respects no reputation, no academics, but respects one and only thing, that is DISCIPLINE.”

The second session on the topic “Financial Education and Wealth Creation” was conducted by Professor Radhakrishna Sharma, Associate Professor, Justice K S Hegde Institute of Management, Nitte.

The symposium was attended by the 200 students of both MBA and M.Com programmes of various colleges in Karnataka State.

The valedictory function was graced by Mr. Michael Lobo, Cluster Head, South Canara and North Karnataka, HDFC Asset Management Company Ltd who addressed the issue of Mutual Funds and its affect on the Indian economy. He stated the role of mutual funds in risk reduction, benefits reaped by the investors from the professional management skills of the fund managers.

Rendition -11 A National Level Paper Presentation Contest and Alumni Excellence awards distributed

Rendition 11, A National Level Paper Presentation Contest organized by the Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering college was inaugurated on 29 September, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering. Block, SJEC. The dignitaries on the dais were Dr. Vijaya Prakash, CEO, D.K. Zilla Parishad as the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director – SJEC and Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC as the Guests of Honour, Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza as the President, Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA, Ms Smita Jesudasan, Rendition Organizing Secretary, Mr Rayan D’Souza, Mr Lanston Pinto and Ms Divya Fernandes, the Student coordinators.

Dr Vijaya Prakash, CEO, D.K. Zilla Parishad in his Inaugural Address remarked that the foresight of the college in organizing the paper presentation contest for the MBA and M.Com students was commendable. He added that the post graduate students should focus and imbibe soft skills apart from the technical skills to succeed in the corporate world.

Dr Joseph Gonsalvis, Principal – SJEC, in his Guest of Honour address wished the paper presenters a success and hoped that they would enrich knowledge and be open to learning.

Rev. Fr Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director, SJEC in his Guest of Honour address commented that the paper presentation would be a success when God showers his blessings and graces.

Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC in his Presidential Remarks stressed that the paper presentation contest would provide fodder for the thought provoking process of knowledge and learning. He encouraged the students to read and improvise on their factual and empirical acumen.

Rev Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC conferred the Alumni Excellence Awards to Mr Riyaz, President, Talent Research Foundation of the Batch 2007 – 09, Mr Nelson Castelino, Proprietor, Nithyadar Battery Works of the Batch 2008 – 10 and Ms Priya Sequeira, Entrepreneur of the Batch 2008 – 10.
