‘Colloquy – 10’, a one day Symposium on Entrepreneurship

The Department of Business Administration, St Joseph Engineering College, Mangalore organized ‘Colloquy – 10’, a one day Symposium on Entrepreneurship on 6th October, 2010. Students from MBA and M.Com programmes from various colleges attended the symposium.

The Chief Guest of the Inauguration function was Mr Jacob Crasta, CEO, CM Envirosystems Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru. In his inaugural speech he motivated students to be enterprising and be passionate about their area of interest. He stated that liberalizing the Indian economy has opened various avenues for entrepreneurship. Prof Eric Patrao, Principal In Charge and Dean (Planning & Development) and Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate, SJEC were the Guests of Honour. Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC presided over the function. Dr. Prakash Pinto, Dean, MBA welcomed the gathering. Ms. Babitha Rohit, Organising Secretary, Colloquy -10 proposed the vote of thanks. Ms. Smita Jesudasan, Senior Lecturer compeered the function.

The resource person for the first session was Prof Edmund Frank, Dean, PG Studies in Business Management, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore. He related his experiences as an entrepreneur and cited several instances for being innovative and enterprising. The second session for the day was taken up by Mr. Kumble Narasimha Prabhu, CEO and Managing Director, Manipal – Ace Event Management Co.(P) Ltd., Mangalore. He enlightened on the opportunities available and the challenges faced by an entrepreneur. He said identifying what one is good at is important to become an entrepreneur. Mr. Ronald D’Souza of Aquatic Biosystems, Mangalore, presented a talk on the scope available in Ornamental Fish farming in Mangalore.

The Symposium concluded with the Valedictory function in the evening. The Chief Guest for this valedictory function was Mr. K. Jairaj Pai, President, Kanara Small Scale Industries Association, Mangalore. In his address to the students he highlighted upon the various schemes of the Government to encourage entrepreneurship. Successful Completion of Rendition 10

The valedictory function of Rendition 10 was held at 4.00 pm in the Conference Hall, Mechanical Engineering Block. The esteemed dignitaries on the dais were, the Chief guest, Mr. A.M. Narahari, Registrar of evaluation, St. Aloysius college, the Guests of Honour –Principal In-charge, Professor A.J. Hegde, Rev. Fr. Joseph Lobo, Director Designate, Rev. Fr. Henry Mascarenhas, Assistant Director, SJEC, the President - Rev. Fr. Valerian D’Souza, Director,SJEC and also Dr. Prakash Pinto, Dean-MBA, Ms. Smita Jesudasan, Faculty Coordinator and Mr. Kailas Bhat , Student Coordinator.

The Chief Guest, Mr. A.M. Narahari, Registrar of Evaluation, St. Aloysius College, in his address mentioned that the enhancement of knowledge in Dakshina Kannada District should be a yardstick for other districts in Karnataka State.

Rev. Fr. Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC congratulated the Department of Business Administration for the success of rendition 10 and hoped that the delegates and paper presenters would be the agents of transformation. Rev. Fr. Joseph Lobo, Director Designate, inspired the students to keep on enhancing their skills and knowledge in the present era of creativity and innovation. The President, Principal In-charge, Professor A.J. Hegde, put forward that in lies within an individual to make their gloomy future a bright one and never leave any opportunity to shape their future.

III semester MBA. The SJEC MBA student choir invoked God’s blessings through a prayer song. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Smita Jesudasan, Faculty Coordinator. The valedictory function was concluded with the National Anthem.

 Dr Uday Kumar, the Chief guest, Associate Professor and Co-ordinator, MBA(IB) programme, University College in his inaugural address emphasized the need to adopt ‘Question the Answer approach’ rather than ‘Answer the Question approach’. He further added that the budding managers should be aware of the objective of their existence and tasks. He remarked that in the present era of dynamism and change, the problem should be viewed as an opportunity and the students should be adept at meeting the inflicted challenges.

Prof. A.J. Hegde, Principal in-charge and Dean (Academics) in his Guest of Honour Address reinforced the views of Dr Uday Kumar, Chief Guest and said that the paper presentation contest should enhance the knowledge of the MBA students.

Rev. Fr Joseph Lobo, Director Designate in his Guest of Honour Address stated that the MBA students should inspire and excel in every walk of life. He encouraged the students to focus on participation and improvise on their skills rather than competing amongst themselves.

In the Presidential address, Rev. Fr Valerian D’Souza, Director, SJEC pronounced that the key to success should be originality in ideas and action rather than imitation. He hoped that Rendition would create value addition.

The SJEC MBA student choir invoked God’s blessings and graces. Dr Prakash Pinto, Dean – MBA welcomed the august gathering. Mr Shivraj, a student of the Third Semester, MBA Programme portrayed a video highlighting the contribution of India to the global economy and showcased the various activities undertaken by the Department of Business Administration, SJEC. Mr Ivan Mendonca and Ms Jean Lobo, students of Third Semester, MBA Programme compeered the Inaugural Session. Mr Arrel Moras, Rendition Student Co-ordinator proposed the vote of thanks.

About 40 MBA and M.Com students from various B-schools at the National level are presenting papers in the fields of Marketing, Finance and Human Resource.

Colloquy - 10 - A Symposium On Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship is a growing area of interest for engineering and management institutes. With the new global economy, businesses and organizations are increasingly expecting their employees to have attitudes, skills and behaviours similar to those that characterize successful entrepreneurs. There is therefore a need and demand to help young people develop their skills and knowledge. The same skills will fabricate a new wave of job creators as opposed to job seekers that we see today.

The symposium is essentially organized to fill the gap in the current education system to cater for more entrepreneurship learning at an early age. It helps the students to inculcate the attitudes and skills required to be successful entrepreneurs.

8 Mentos worth Thousand Rupees at St Joseph Engineering College

Inspired by the www.oneredpaperclip.com the students of the second year MBA (HR & Marketing specialization) bartered 8 Mentos worth 50 ps each for products worth more than thousand rupees within 2 hours. In an exercise conducted as a part of SJEC MBA Tutorial on Saturday, September 18, 2010 between 12:00 to 2:00pm at St Joseph Engineering College campus, Vamanjoor, Mangalore. Mr Peter Brian Benjamin, Lecturer., Mr Chaco P. J., Lecturer, and Mr Suraj Francis Noronha, Lecturer, St Joseph Engineering College conducted the exercise.

The students had a practical exercise on negotiation, communication and identified the basic principles of a business. The Final products which the students got were: Yardley, eva and axe perfume, mementos and paperweights, blank DVD’s, harddisk, scissors, folders, coffee mugs, CD Rom drive, sandals, vegetable seeds and other products. The winners of the competition were Mr Shivaraj A V Shetty, Ms Manisha D Kaup, and Ms Naziya and they were rewarded with the products that they had bartered.

Orientation Program for First Year MBA Students

Two day orientation program was organised on 13th and 14th September, 2010 at the Department for the 2010-12 batch of MBA students. The sessions were taken by: Dr Anjali Ganesh, Prof. B. V. Raghunandan, Dr Prakash Pinto, Ms Felcy D'Souza (Librarian), Peter Brain Benjamin and Suraj Francis Noronha.

Confluence - The Wall Magazine of SJEC MBA

The MBA students of St Joseph Engineering College have initiated a wall magazine which is updated everyday by the students themselves. Articles written by the students or which they find interesting will be displayed in Confluence.

Teachers Day Celebrated in SJEC

The students of Second year MBA celebrated Teachers Day on 6th September, 2010. Ivon Mendonca spoke about the importance of the day. Dr Prakash Pinto (Dean MBA), Dr Anjali Ganesh and others faculty members were present for the program. Refreshments were served after the program.
